Description of Location The student will conduct research at the Horticulture Teaching and Research Center (HTRC), near the main MSU campus in East Lansing. The studies will also be conducted at various research stations and growers’ fields. All course work will be taken at the main campus, and the office space will be provided at the main MSU campus in East Lansing.

Description of duties The Department of Horticulture at Michigan State University is seeking qualified and highly motivated individual interested in obtaining a M.S. or Ph.D. degree in Horticulture Crops Weed Science. Research will focus on integrated weed management techniques including chemical, mechanical, and cultural control measures. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to design and conduct field, greenhouse, laboratory research in weed management in various fruit and vegetable crops. The student will be expected to collect data, perform data analyses, and prepare reports, present research results in field days, extension meetings, and scientific conferences.  The student will participate in North Central Weed Science Society and Weed Science Society of America meetings and prepare manuscripts for scientific journals and extension publications.  In addition, the student will manage various experimental equipment and provide technical assistance to other weed science studies.  
Qualifications sought
  • BS or MS degree in plant science, horticulture, agronomy, weed science, or any other related fields.
  • Experience in field and greenhouse research, and ability to use Microsoft office software to manage, summarize and produce summary statistics on research data
  • Demonstrated excellence in course work, good written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work as a team member with other graduate students, professional staff, and faculty members
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work in inclement weather conditions during the cropping season
  • For international applicants, TOEFL or IELTS scores must be submitted.
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license
