Description of duties

The Department of Crop & Soil Science invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, Fixed-Term Assistant Professor of Practice position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

80% – Oregon Organic Extension Program
This position is based in western Oregon has regional geographic (60%) and statewide (20%) duties. The position is part of the Organic Extension Program led by Center for Small Farms & Community Food Systems. The Center, in its catalyst role, will link the position to other programs and colleges at OSU as well as statewide and community-based non-profit organizations working with sustainable agriculture and community food systems. In addition, because of the integrated nature of organic farming, this position will have direct and indirect collaborations with faculty in Crop & Soil Science, Animal and Rangeland Science, Horticulture, Food Science and Technology, the Entomology Program, Botany and Plant Pathology, and other departments and programs that will support the emerging needs of this position.

10% – Scholarly Outcomes
Scholarly and creative work is intellectual work whose significance is validated by peers and that is communicated. Emphasis in scholarship should be placed on outcomes that recognize activities as a professional practitioner in community settings as defined by the incumbent’s position description.

5% – Organizational Accountability
Utilize technology successfully as a tool to increase the impact of program delivery on constituents including participating with Ask-an-Expert.

5% – Service
Serve as an effective team member with the Small Farms Program, the Center for Small Farms & Community Food Systems, and the Extension Agriculture Program.

Qualifications sought

Master’s degree in agronomy, soil science, crop science, or related field.

Demonstrated experience with and specialized knowledge of organic pasture and forage production systems, and the philosophical basis of organic and other agroecological approaches to agriculture.

Demonstrated knowledge of organic certification standards for pastures, hay and other forages.

Demonstrated teaching, written and oral communication skills including effective use of electronic (traditional and web-based) and printed mass media.

Demonstrated ability to work as a team member with other professionals and volunteers.

General ability to use common computers, including proficiency with information technology, web sites and social media.

Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to manage competing time demands.

Demonstrated ability to lead groups and to plan, organize, evaluate, manage, and delegate details associated with program management.

Demonstrated ability to incorporate multiple cultural perspectives in educational design and delivery.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion.

Must maintain an Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Consultant License throughout employment.
