Description of duties

Research will involve long-term evaluation of changes in weed communities in cotton and soybean as a function of chemical and non-chemical weed control tactics. Non-chemical approaches to weed management will emphasize the use of cover crops, tillage, and mechanical seed capture and destruction. Economic evaluation of the systems wll be expected. Additional research will focus on the impact of crop production practices on weed seed retention. The successful candidate will work as part of a large weed science graduate program gaining experience in cotton, corn, soybean, grain sorghum, and rice. There will be opportunities to collaborate with colleagues on multi-state projects. It is expected that annual reports will be written summarizing research findings, and presentations given at field days and scientific meetings.  There will likely be opportunities to travel and present findings outside of the U.S.

Qualifications sought
  • M.S. degree in Weed Science or closely related field
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing and speaking
  • Demonstrated willingness to provide leadership within a group
  • Preference will be given to candidates that have experience in crop production and use of commerical equipment

Description of duties

The research will be centered on optimization of the See and Spray technology that will soon be commercialized by John Deere (Blue River). Research will involve comparing broadcast programs to ones involving the See and Spray technology.  The impact of crop row width, canopy formation, weed size, morphological characteristics of weeds, soil moisture and color are just a few of the factors that will be evaluated.  The research will be conducted at research stations across Arkansas and possibly in commerical production fields.  The candidate will work closely with John Deere on portions of project and will have the opportunity to collaborate with others on the project.  Also, the candidate will be expected to write annual reports summarizing results and speak at grower production meetings.  Additoinally, there will be five to six opportunities per year to speak at scientific meetings.  Crops in which the candidate will conduct research will include cotton, corn, soybean, grain sorghum, and rice.

Qualifications sought
  • M.S. degree in a science related displine with preference given to those having knowledge of Weed Science
  • Demonstrated success in writing and speaking at the undergraduate and M.S. levels
  • Knowledge of equipment and use of geospatial data are preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and willingness to be provide those skills within a large program focused on answering applied research questions
