Description of duties

This is a degree-track position. Graduate assistants will pursue graduate studies leading to an M.S. degree. Tuition is covered as part of the assistantship.

Duties will include assisting project leader (Dr. Tommy Butts) in conducting field, greenhouse, and laboratory research to evaluate the effects of cultural management strategies (drill spacing, variety selection, and irrigation furrow-width) and herbicide application technologies on weed control in flooded and furrow-irrigated (row) rice. The incumbent will help coordinate all phases of the multi-state research project including trial maintenance, data collection, data entry, and statistical analyses. The successful applicant will also participate in other program related research activities including weed management in rice, soybean, and wheat crops, as well as other application technology research both from ground and aerial spray equipment. It is expected that annual reports and Extension articles will be written summarizing research findings. Collaboration with other disciplines, graduate students, and universities will also be expected. There will be opportunities for travel and presenting at various field days, Extension events, and scientific meetings.

Qualifications sought
  • B.S. in agronomy or related area.
  • Applicant must be qualified for graduate degree program and possess the desire to excel in the classroom and with professional development.
  • The applicant must be able to communicate effectively, both written and oral.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Preference will be given to candidates that have experience in crop production and use of commercial production equipment.
