Type of position A postdoctoral position is available with the Weed Science Lab at the University of Florida/IFAS Southwest Florida Research and Education Center (SWFREC) to examine the effects of cultural practices on herbicide use and weed management in citrus.

Description of Location The SWFREC is located in the heart of citrus and vegetable production in Florida and provides a unique opportunity to combine scientific research with the industry’s needs. The research center is based in Immokalee and is about 30 miles northeast of Naples and 30 miles east of Fort Myers, two beautiful coastal cities in southwest Florida.

Description of duties

The project’s primary focus consists of field trials evaluating the impacts of cover crops and soil amendments on weed control strategies. The project will also assess the influence of such treatments on the environmental fate and behavior of herbicides used in citrus production. Expertise in weed research, herbicide-soil interactions,  herbicide analysis utilizing liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is preferred.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to associate with a diverse faculty team, including plant physiologist and soil microbiologist. The incumbent will develop hypotheses based on current literature, design and conduct experiments, perform work in the laboratory and field, analyze data, and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. The postdoctoral associate will work independently with minimal supervision. This is currently a 3-year position. Occasional travel to field sites distant from the research center is required.

Qualifications sought

Minimum qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in weed science, soil science, horticulture science, or related fields
  • Evidence of effective scientific writing and publication in English
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to work under hot and humid conditions for prolonged periods

Preferred Qualifications: Proficiency with LC-MS, Herbicide fate modeling, Weed ecology, Experience in extraction and analysis of herbicides from the soil and plant tissues, Experience with grant writing
