Description of duties Title: U.S. Forest Service Special Uses Individual Placement

Start/End Date:  June 14th, 2021 – October 15th, 2021

Stipend:  $500.00/week (+Education Award) 

Term:    18 weeks 

Reports To:  US Forest Service – San Juan National Forest, Columbine Ranger District

Location:  Bayfield, CO 81122

Status:  675-hour AmeriCorps Service Term 

Benefits:  AmeriCorps Education Award $2,360.00 after successful completion 

Join the Southwest Conservation Corps’ intern team and help the US Forest Service carry out its mission to prioritize sustainable recreational opportunities that will unite diverse interests, create and strengthen partnerships, provide in shared stewardship opportunities, and maintain and improve public access. The special uses department manages all administrative and oversight programs in support of commercial operations, outfitter guiding, and special events on San Juan National Forest.

The primary focus of this position will be to conduct commercial uses field monitoring and inspections, record monitoring inspection data, and record daily logs. This individual will provide administrative and operation support for the Recreation Special Uses programs. The special uses program support multiple program areas, and the selected candidate will receive a number of cross training opportunities across the San Juan National Forest’s recreation programs.

This program supports shared issues across the districts to improve consistency and customer service. The intern will assist in the following:

  • Recreation Special Uses Program: Support for outfitters and guides, events, recreation residence, and other recreation special use permits.
    • Database entry and support
    • Outfitter guide inspections, special event inspections, and field monitoring
  • In addition to assigned primary duties there will be opportunities for exploring other disciplines within the U.S. Forest Service and personal growth
Qualifications sought General Qualifications:  

  • Combination of office skills and field, with an emphasis on office skills
  • Basic computer proficiency and understanding of database entry
  • Ability to drive a four-wheel drive vehicle
  • Ability to hike 4 – 8 miles in a day (occasionally)
  • Comfortable communicating with the public
  • Willingness to engage in horse back riding, mountain biking, and OHV’s
  • Ability to maintain daily reporting and daily records

The successful applicant must be self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision after the initial training period. The applicant must be able to maneuver and operate in a mixture of office and field work. This can include long periods of standing or walking on rough, uneven ground, bending, crouching, and stooping.  Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and be able to dive on low standard and high-clearance roads. Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.
