Description of duties

We are looking for a Procurement Manager of Live Goods and Seed, who will join our Direct Procurement team in Marysville, OH.

This position will be based at The Scotts Miracle-Gro world headquarters in Marysville, a suburb of Columbus, OH. Not familiar with Columbus? Visit columbusregion.com/columbus-2020/

This position is responsible for developing and executing long term operating strategies for Live Goods (Potted Plants, Seed Packets, Botanicals) and Raw/Pack material purchases for Scotts Miracle-Gro’s Direct to Consumer (DTC) and Digitally Native Vertical Brands (DNVB) efforts. Brands including: Knock!Knock!, Greendigs, Bark Yard, AeroGarden. This experienced self-starter will be responsible for interfacing with and leading our marketing teams in Marysville and Regional and National Nurseries and growers.

What you’ll do in this role:
* The individual in this position will develop and execute disciplined sourcing strategies of live goods and seed purchases for the Scotts Miracle-Gro brands in support of our Direct to Consumer (DTC) and Digitally Native Vertical Brands (DNVB).
* Develop and execute live goods purchasing plans that synchronize needs with seasonal growing cycles and yields.
* Actively manage external relationships with growers/nurseries and all facets of the supply chain: freight, logistics, warehousing; streamlining operations for greater agility at best value.
* Partner with brand teams to understand key business needs and build purchasing plans that meet sales volumes/timing.
* Lead the supplier selection and evaluation of capabilities, cost structure, risks, and partnership potential to determine globally diverse supply base; developing and maintaining relationships with key existing and potential suppliers.
* Conduct Analyses: (Porter, SWOT, Supply Demand, Supplier, Industry, Competitive, Economic and Cost structure)
* Utilize appropriate tactical plans/interventions (market, technical, supplier relationship, internal work process, cost structure) to deliver business needs (cash, cost, innovation, quality, risk mitigation, sustainability, stewardship)
* Align cross leadership/cross functional partners to plan
* Forecast spend/material pricing variance monthly
* Actively manage supplier relationships to create and deliver maximum value as it pertains to cash flow, long-term cost savings, improved utilization of assets, business building and innovation.
* Negotiate and execute contractual agreements.
* Ensure compliance related process and procedures are uncompromised (OMRI, OIM, Sarbanes-Oxley)
* Be the Company expert in this space; understanding trends and commodity market fundamentals.
* Lead/Develop a Purchasing Specialist whose responsibilities include hard goods/packaging materials (every plant has a pot!)
* Actively participate in the leadership of the Direct Procurement Team
* Stewardship: must have a demonstrated ability to understand, apply policy, procedures and standards
* Travel as required (Domestic & International)

What you’ll need to be successful:
* Education: Minimum Bachelors Degree in Plant Science, Horticulture, Agronomy, Operations, Supply Chain Management preferred. Desired: MBA
* Experience: Minimum: 5+ years related commercial nursery experience
* Effective communication: Key procurement interface with Senior Management. Must be able to effectively communicate across all levels and functions within SMG and with external business partners. Demonstrated ability to influence business choices/direction, both commercially and technically. Proven ability to communicate across geographical regions and understand cultural differences.
* Builds diverse, collaborative relationships- This role requires building effective relationships cross-functionally, globally, and with external partners. There will be a high level of interaction with commercial lead teams and technical teams. Must also be able to identify and develop new supplier relationships.
* Disciplined: Must demonstrate ability to handle a large volume of responsibility while setting and managing priorities accordingly. This role will entail responsibilities for both current business and new business. Growing Media is a fast-paced environment.
* Critical thinking: Proven ability to develop unique solutions to business problems and enroll others in your vision. Must be creative and have ability to think out the box in developing game-changing strategies for long-term business growth. Must be able to see the big picture and develop solutions in context of the total business. Must be able to independently source and evaluate supplier capabilities. Must be able to make methodical and intelligent decisions relative to strategy and negotiations.
* Leadership- Must be a strong, passionate leader who is willing to set stretching goals. Able to create a vision and environment which will enroll, energize and enable cross-functional team to meet/exceed their goals. Must be able to set direction, integrate different needs of customers, set priorities, and influence actions of entire organization, including senior management.
* Ability to effectively navigate in a regulated industry (ie; Organic/OMRI requirements)
* Ability to speak the technical language of R&D, vendors and the business language of the Brands and Purchasing.
* Solid negotiations skills
* Strong computer skills (SAP R/3, SAP/PLM, MS office/Google programs)
* Must possess good judgment, initiative, strong work ethic and dependability.
* Consumer Products / Live Goods experience a plus.
