Description of duties Seeking an outstanding student to conduct research on cultural strategies for managing weeds and soil-borne diseases in irrigated cropland in southern New Mexico.  The research will focus on cover crops and green manures for suppressing pests and reducing reliance on hand-hoeing in chile pepper production.  The project will also involve identification and quantification of insect pests on chile pepper.  With opportunities to study multiple types of agricultural pests, this project is ideally suited for students interested in integrated pest management and agroecology.
Qualifications sought
  1. B.S. in a plant science, agricultural, or biology discipline
  2. Research experience in field and greenhouse settings
  3. Desire to learn statistical techniques
  4. Desire to develop strong written and oral communication skills
