Type of position The Regional Crops Educator is an exciting new position in the UW-Madison Division of Extension, designed to meet the research-based educational and outreach needs of field and forage crop producers in multi-county regions and across the state. We are hiring three Regional Crop Educators to serve multi-county regions throughout Wisconsin.

Description of Employer The Division of Extension serves the people and communities of Wisconsin by addressing local, statewide and national issues, improving lives through research-based education, fostering partnerships and action, and facilitating positive impacts. This position is a part of the Division of Extension’s Agriculture Institute. The Agriculture Institute facilitates and develops research-based educational programs and informational materials around agricultural and horticultural topics for farm businesses, individuals and families in Wisconsin.

Description of Location Service areas include:
-Jefferson and Rock Counties (There is also is a research farm in Rock County that the Educator can utilize to facilitate producer learning)
-Barron and St. Croix Counties
-Door, Kewaunee, and Brown Counties
Salary 50,000

Description of duties

A Regional Crops Educator will be a leader in applying research findings and providing education and outreach efforts to crop producers. This is done through assessment of needs and designing, delivering, and evaluating research-based educational programming and services to meet these needs.

This position is a part of the Agriculture Institute’s Crops and Soils Program and will cover:
-Field and forage crop production including variety selection, weed management, disease management, nutrient management, and other general crop management topics
-The Educator will be expected to work with the Program to select one aspect of crop production to develop and maintain expertise that is complementary to other staff and shared across the state.

Qualifications sought

Required:
1. Three years of professional experience relevant to the programmatic responsibilities of the position;
2. Experience in understanding, interpreting, utilizing and applying research findings
3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively using a variety of methods and technology; and
4. Demonstrated ability to effectively work with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity.

Preferred:
1. Master’s degree in a related field of study such as plant science, horticulture, agronomy, plant pathology or entomology
2. Demonstrated experience in understanding experimental design, statistical analysis and interpreting research data.
3. Demonstrated experience with building diverse, collaborative partnerships
4. Demonstrated educational program development skills including planning and implementing programs; evaluating learning experiences; and communicating program impact and value to stakeholders
5. Demonstrated experience using collaborative leadership to accomplish project goals, including the ability to convene and facilitate diverse groups of stakeholders
6. Demonstrated fiscal management skills including budget development
7. Demonstrated ability to write grants and establish partnerships that pool or leverage public and private funds in support of the Institutional mission
8. Strong interpersonal relationship and problem-solving skills in a team setting
