Description of duties

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Forage Seed and Cereal Research Unit in Corvallis, OR seeks to hire a Research Weed Scientist ($82,694 -$98,334 per annum, plus benefits) broadly interested in understanding and managing intractable weeds in seed crop production systems of the Pacific Northwest. A fundamental approach based on integrated weed management combined with alternative tactics and new technology is key to controlling especially challenging weeds. This approach fits within a holistic cropping system program and meshes with other grower practices.

The study of weed biology and ecology is a rapidly advancing field and has led to new and developing weed management strategies. Plant competition and species diversity are cultural practices important for seed crop production systems. Using remote sensing and unmanned aerial vehicles to identify specific weeds and biotypes within seed crop fields are emerging technologies with potential for utilization by growers. Climate change is testing the resiliency of seed crop production systems and understanding how weeds respond in these systems will be important for current and new control tactics. The scientist coordinates with researchers working in microbiology, plant pathology, soil science, and entomology to solve complex problems that conserve natural resources, advance sustainability, and increase yield and seed quality. The position is located on the campus of Oregon State University, which offers the potential for collaboration with a broad range of academic disciplines, resources, and programs that can advance the hire’s research program.
