Description of Location The Williston Research Extension Center (WREC) is one of seven branch NDSU research extension centers consisting of 19 staff members and is located four and one-half miles west of Williston, North Dakota. Historic Fort Union Trading Post and Fort Buford along the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers confluence are just outside the city; and the beautiful North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park is a short distance away. The area offers excellent hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, golfing and a local college. More information about the area is available at www.willisonnd.com.

Description of duties

North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension is recruiting a highly motivated educator to serve as Extension Weed Specialist for northwest North Dakota.  NDSU Extension is an organization that values people who excel, adapt easily, exhibit passion for helping others, and are excellent communicators. The specialist is a member of a statewide Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources team responsible for providing leadership to create and deliver innovative learning experiences that empower North Dakotans to improve their lives and communities.

Position Description & Details: The Extension Weed Specialist is responsible for providing innovative Extension programing that will serve a diverse clientele of producers, as well as industry and advisory groups. Programing will focus primarily on production agriculture issues and providing education to Extension agents, producers, and agricultural processors. The specialist will work closely with Extension agents and build collaborative relationships with stakeholders to achieve goals. This position will be based at the NDSU Williston Research Extension Center (WREC) located near Williston, ND. The WREC Director will provide supervision for this position.   • Develop an innovative Extension program that includes the identification, assessment, and delivery of educational programs that will facilitate the development of weed management education opportunities for Extension agents, producers, landowners, economic development leaders, industry and entities of government.
  • Provide expertise and continuing education training to Extension agents and clients to strengthen the knowledge base of Extension personnel statewide.
  • Provide expertise and assistance in weed management and agronomic issues to Extension agents and other clients.
  • Stay current in the production practices of crops grown within the area of the WREC.
  • Collaborate with appropriate Extension specialists, research faculty, Extension agents, and WREC faculty and staff to deliver statewide weed management related programs.
  • Develop individual and team-based Extension programs and publications that disseminate information to producers, industry personnel, and Extension agents.
  • Secure extramural funding to support Extension programming and applied research.
  • Communicate with other Extension personnel, appropriate Research Extension Center personnel, and producers about issues that need new or additional research. When appropriate, provide leadership for the development and demonstration of novel management strategies that ensure program relevancy and the ability to guide producer efforts to adapt to changing production systems.
  • Develop relationships and cooperate with research and Extension faculty within the NDSU Department of Plant Sciences and other agricultural departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications sought

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Masters of Science degree in weed science or a closely related field.
  • Broad knowledge in crop production, herbicide use, weed management strategies, and weed identification.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and technology.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in working with varied audiences, including individuals and groups, as a team member.
  • North Dakota commercial applicator license or ability to obtain; and valid U.S. driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in weed science or Ph.D. in related area with demonstrated experience in weed science.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide education programs for Extension agents, farmers and crop advisors.
  • Skill in diagnosing plant injury symptoms.
  • Experience with Northern Plains dryland and/or irrigated agriculture
  • Successful grant writing experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to use social media and virtual delivery platforms.
