Location Attapulgus, GA
Description of Location The Research and Education Center (REC) at Attapulgus is located in southwestern Georgia, about five miles north of the Florida border. The facility is an integral part of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and is one of eight RECs that are located throughout the state. Established in 1939, the Center helps support area farmers by conducting research on crops that are adapted to the sandy coastal plain soils and local weather conditions. Major agronomic crops in the area include peanuts, cotton, corn and soybeans, while key horticultural crops include sweetcorn and tomatoes. Much of the research is conducted with either center pivot or with drip irrigation systems.

Description of duties

This position provides leadership for the team-based research programs and outreach efforts at the Research and Education Center (REC) located at Attapulgus, GA.  The incumbent is responsible for developing policies and procedures for the management and operation of the REC including facilities, equipment, management of commercial crop production and sales, budget development and prioritization, research center personnel management, and the development and/or enhancement of public relations. The superintendent is the liaison between the REC, CAES researchers, and CAES Extension. The superintendent facilitates research and outreach projects in cooperation with faculty, and also is expected to conduct independent research and outreach programs. The superintendent is expected to seek funding and other resources to help support the operation and essential functions of the research facility.  The incumbent will report to the CAES Assistant Dean for Research.

Qualifications sought

Required Qualifications:  Applicant must have a M.S. degree in agronomy, entomology, genetics, horticulture, plant pathology or a related field. Experience in conducting field research. Experience in experimental design, statistical analysis and data interpretation.

Preferred Qualifications:  Demonstrated supervisory and management experience. Experience in developing and managing budgets. Excellent organizational and administrative abilities as well as excellent communication, team building and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated knowledge of production practices for major crops grown in the area. Research experience relating to integrated pest management and irrigated production practices.  Familiarity with precision agricultural techniques and applications and evidence of publishing in scientific journals and writing grants.
