Today the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) announced it will participate in the upcoming annual meeting of the Aquatic Plant Management Society (APMS). WSSA is an exhibitor at the event, scheduled for July 13-16 in Savannah, Ga.
The APMS annual meeting draws scientists, educators, public officials and others interested in invasive aquatic plants, including their impact and effective management techniques. This year more than four dozen educational sessions are planned. Examples include:
- Modeling to predict future aquatic weed invasions
- Long-range control of algae using ultrasound
- Using remote sensing to distinguish between invasive aquatic species
- The role of native aquatic vegetation in an integrated weed management plan
- Mapping invasive water hyacinth in the Illinois River
- Ecological effects of water-willow on aquatic invertebrate species
- Aquatic weed and algae control in irrigation canals
- New herbicide resistance educational materials developed jointly by APMS and WSSA
A special opening session will be devoted to avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM), a neurological disease affecting water birds that has been linked to submerged hydrilla infestations.
“The costly impact of aquatic weeds is felt keenly in communities across our nation,” says Lee Van Wychen, Ph.D., science policy director for the Weed Science Society of America. “When left unchecked, aquatic weeds can impair water supplies, disrupt natural habitats, promote flooding and impede valuable commerce, recreation and tourism. It is vital that we share emerging research and best management practices.”
