Description of duties

The Product Support and Renewal (PS&R) group within Global Development Biology organization is searching for a Primary Investigator to support our exciting pipeline of new herbicides, including the development of the first novel mode of action herbicide in our industry in over 30 years. In addition to characterizing new pipeline molecules, the PS&R group also provides technical support to our regional teams to ensure our commercial herbicides portfolio delivers the quality that our customers expect from FMC proprietary products.

The Primary Investigator works with a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary team of scientists to support new product registrations and the launch of new products around the world. They work closely with the global network of PS&R scientists to characterize new active ingredients in our development pipeline, as well as to support commercial product market expansion. Their experience will allow them to conduct herbicide research in the laboratory, greenhouse, and/or field settings. The successful candidate will serve as a subject matter expert on weed science, herbicide action, and assigned FMC herbicide active ingredients for the life cycle of products in partnership with our Global Technical Product Managers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop well-designed research experiments to address testable hypotheses using sound scientific methods with statistical validity
  • Characterize attributes of new synthetic products (i.e. formulation optimization, mode of action, efficacy, crop safety) via lab, greenhouse and field studies. Develop new bioassays and troubleshoot existing ones as needed to complete study objectives
  • Work closely with interdisciplinary team to address product performance questions arising from field data for pipeline and portfolio projects.
  • Develop protocols for GH and field PS&R studies in coordination with regional teams; collect and manage results and data in proprietary data systems. Write data summaries and communicate results/recommendations to project team as well as FMC leadership.
  • Implementation of experiments, including scheduling and data collection, that support multiple internal and external partners
  • Support global herbicide resistance monitoring program for new active ingredients in coordination with the Global Technical Product Managers and regional R&D teams
  • Generate technical documents which thoroughly characterize internal assets, with supporting data, for use by various shareholder including biologists, regulator, commercial, and marketing teams; conduct training of country teams to support new product launches and increase herbicide competency
  • Evaluate innovative new technologies in conjunction with our commercial Precision Agriculture and Global R&D Plant Health teams.
  • Supervise associate scientists, contractors, and interns.
Qualifications sought
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary, highly collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated action-oriented, results-driven mindset and the ability to lead diverse teams to drive results.
  • In-depth understanding of current weed problems in major crops, and subsequent characterization of herbicide resistance in weeds species.
  • In depth knowledge of testing methodologies and assay development to address various active ingredients and product formulations; demonstrated ability to manage data quality issues.
  • Knowledge of chemical and environmental conditions that can negatively impact product performance or result in adverse crop conditions
  • Experience applying pesticides using various application methods
  • Knowledge of a broad range of agricultural cropping systems, pests, management practices, and products; familiarity with agricultural innovations such as precision application and advanced knowledge of computer technology is a strong distinguishing factor
  • Strong critical thinking capabilities and the ability to constructively challenge assumptions
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including group presentations of experimental results
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Willing to work in a group of diverse people while supporting team members to meet team objectives.
