The Weed Science faculty are embedded in the Departments of Horticultural Science and Crop and Soil Sciences. The Department of Horticultural Science is composed of 34 faculty (88% tenure track). The department delivers research, creative design, innovative teaching, extension, and outreach associated with the production and utilization, ecology, breeding and basic biology of fruit, vegetable, flower, ornamental, and functional horticultural plants. The department optimizes the role of plants in addressing local to global grand challenges.
The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research, extension and teaching to develop future leaders in crop, soil and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, develop effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings. Personnel disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed, turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world. |

Description of duties |
The Department of Horticulture Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University is pleased to announce recruitment for a 12-month tenure-track Assistant Professor with formal appointments in Research (80%) and Teaching (20%).
Weed Science is an interdepartmental program with faculty housed in both the Department of Horticultural Science and Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. The candidate will have the opportunity to select a home department affiliation between these two departments, in keeping with the future needs of the candidate and College programs. Regardless of departmental affiliation, the candidate is expected to have strong collaborative ties to Weed Science programs in both departments. The incumbent will conduct research in molecular genetics and genomics of weeds and invasive plants, including efforts to develop novel biotechnologies for weed management. The position will teach a graduate class in Herbicide Mode of Action and Behavior in Plants and a new course in molecular tools in weed science research (taught in alternative years), depending on the candidate’s expertise and departmental priorities. The incumbent will develop a nationally and internationally recognized, collaborative, and extramurally funded program that advances scholarly leadership and outputs to accelerate weed management outcomes through genetics, genomics, and molecular biology. The incumbent will participate in interdisciplinary programs such as the Interdepartmental Weed Science Program, Plant Breeding Consortium, https://cals.ncsu.edu/psi/” target=”_blank”>Plant Science Initiative, the INitiative for TRanslational, INtegrative and SYnthetiC Plant Biology (INTRINSyC), and Plants for Human Health Institute (PHHI). The incumbent should participate in external collaborations, with funding agencies and other partners. The incumbent will provide service to professional societies and to the department and College as requested.
