Description of duties This full-time Biological Scientist II (TEAMS) position is located in the Agronomy Department in Gainesville, Florida. This position is one related to weed science in various settings, and it is intended to facilitate a variety of field, greenhouse and laboratory research and extension activities in the Weed Science program. Working under general supervision, the incumbent will be primarily responsible for the conductance of field, greenhouse, and laboratory research, including but not limited to its design, preparation, maintenance, treatments application, plant and/or soil material samples collection and preparation for analysis or shipping, collection of scientific data (including subjective visual and objective using research instruments), data entry and research records maintenance, research projects coordination, communication with research cooperators, and for compiling research upon project completion. Other responsibilities include but may not be limited to overseeing and performing maintenance of laboratories, field and research equipment and instruments, including their calibration and repair (or coordination of such) if needed, inventory maintenance, supplies purchasing. The incumbent might be also involved in students and/or OPS employees training in experimental techniques, assistance in their research, oversight of various activities. Required skillset includes but is not limited to the capacity of conducting demanding physical activities (including working outdoors in the field environment), exceptional organization, time management and attention to details, creativity and problem solving. The incumbent is expected to be willing to work with pesticides on a daily basis and will be required to take and pass a pesticide applicator license.

Qualifications sought Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

The incumbent is expected to be willing to work with pesticides on a daily basis and will be required to take and pass a pesticide applicator license.

Field research includes travel to various out of town research sites, as such the incumbent must possess a valid driver license (or obtain it shortly after hire) and be willing to travel and operate a pick-up truck and/or large SUV to transport research equipment.

The ability to handle heavy equipment (aerification and verticutting equipment, tractors, etc.) and mechanical skills would be an asset.

The ability to supervise and effectively manage others would be preferred.

The ability to operate unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) would be considered as advantage.
