| Description of Location | The Southern Agricultural Research Center (SARC) is a 462-acre facility located in the Huntley-Worden Irrigation Project approximately 15 miles east of Billings, Montana. The center conducts agronomic research and education programs for agriculture in the dryland and irrigated areas located in proximity to the Yellowstone River Valley of south-central Montana. Major crops include winter and spring wheat, malt and feed barley, oat, sugar beets, silage and field corn, dry beans, alfalfa, as well as substantial hay and pasture acreage. Sprinkler irrigation occurs in the region, but flood irrigation districts predominate in the river valleys where higher value crops are grown. Dryland small grains are mostly produced in crop-fallow rotations. | Description of duties |
The Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistant hired for this project will be responsible for conducting research related to managing weed seedbanks in specialty crops, and other related duties as needed. The duties include designing and conducting field, lab, and greenhouse experiments to evaluate the impact of various herbicides on weed populations and crop productivity, as well as explore the use of remote sensing and machine learning for data collection and analysis. The successful candidate will coordinate field research at two sites across Montana, and be responsible for data collection and analysis, preparing annual research reports, and presenting findings at scientific meetings. Collaboration with colleagues on multi-state projects is expected, and the candidate will participate in lab meetings, extension activities, and other weed science program research. The candidate will also prepare manuscripts for publication and will have opportunities to participate in the preparation of research grants. It is important to note that the candidate will be required to obtain a pesticide application license to conduct the research, as well as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) license for data collection purposes. |
