|Description of duties
Conducts research on weeds and weed seed banks in soils of cereal-based production systems of the Pacific Northwest. Incumbent determines the genetic, physiological, and biochemical factors that contribute to weed persistence in the soil seed bank. Leads research to determine the role of mutation, migration, selection, and random genetic drift in the spread of important traits, including herbicide resistance, in weed species. Collaborates with other scientists to determine how interactions among genetic factors, crop production practices, soil microbes and invertebrates, and soil health influence weed seed longevity and composition in the soil. Advanced knowledge of weed science, plant physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics is desirable. Incumbent is responsible for planning and conducting personal research, interpreting results, preparing manuscripts, preparing annual reports, and management of project resources and extramural grants; and providing technical information and consultations on research projects within ARS and with partners in universities, private foundations, and industry.
A Ph.D. with a focus in weed science, plant physiology, plant biochemistry, plant genetics, plant molecular biology or related area is preferred. A strong record of scholarly/professional achievement commensurate with experience is required.
