Description of Duties

The Department of Crop and Soil Science in the program of Weed Science at Oregon State University is seeking a motivated and dedicated graduate student to join our research team as a Graduate Research Assistant. This position focuses on precision weed management in specialty crop production. The successful candidate will work on innovative research projects aimed at developing and implementing advanced weed management strategies to improve the sustainability and productivity of specialty crops. Specifically, the successful candidate will focus on developing and refining application technology such as spot spraying to selectively target and control weed species within specialty seed crops. This research aims to enhance the precision and efficacy of herbicide applications to improve crop quality within Oregon’s diverse cropping systems. The Graduate Student Will: – Conduct field and greenhouse experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of precision weed management techniques. – Utilize advanced technologies, such as remote sensing, GIS, and machine learning, to identify and manage weed populations in specialty crops. – Collect, analyze, and interpret data related to weed biology, ecology, and management. – Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, extension specialists, and industry stakeholders. – Prepare and present research findings at scientific conferences, extension meetings, and through peer-reviewed publications. – Assist in writing grant proposals and progress reports for funding agencies. – Mentor undergraduate students and participate in outreach activities related to weed science and precision agriculture.
Master’s degree in Weed Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, Geographic Information Systems, Ag. Engineering or a related field.Strong interest in weed science, precision agriculture, and GIS technologiesExperience with field research, data collection, and statistical analysis.Familiarity with remote sensing, GIS, and/or machine learning applications in agriculture is highly desirable.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Willingness to engage in physical fieldwork under various environmental conditions.
