Assistant Professor Weed Ecology

Description of Duties

The successful candidate will develop a nationally recognized, externally funded, innovative research program in weed science, including weed ecology, biology, and development of sustainable weed management systems. The successful applicant is expected to conduct basic and applied research to solve weed management problems in conventional and organic cropping systems. The primary focus will be on corn, soybean, wheat, and vegetable crops important to the economic viability of South Dakota farmers. The incumbent is expected to work closely and cooperatively with multi-state researchers and government agencies in related fields. Undergraduate and graduate level teaching and mentoring is expected. Publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals is required. Research areas should focus on 1) devising and testing integrated weed management strategies in conventional and organic production systems; (2) developing alternative, ecologically sound strategies to manage herbicide-resistant weeds; (3) investigating how climate change impacts weed management practices and the evolution of weed species; and (4) incorporating precision agriculture technologies into management strategies of herbicide resistant weeds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:• Ph.D. in Agronomy, Weed Science, Plant Science, Ecology, or closely related discipline;• Potential to pursue and obtain competitive funding;• Potential to publish in peer reviewed academic journals; and• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:• University teaching experience; • Postdoctoral experience, or international equivalent, with independent or team-focused research is preferred.
