PhD GRA/GTA in Weed Science

Description of Duties

The PhD GRA/GTA will conduct research focused on integrated weed management strategies to address herbicide resistance in agroecosystems. Responsibilities include designing and implementing field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments to assess the impact of agronomic practices on weed populations, soil health, and crop productivity.

The role involves data collection, management, and analysis using statistical and computational tools. The candidate will coordinate field trials across multiple Colorado locations, collaborate with producers and researchers, and disseminate results through scientific publications, presentations, and extension outreach.

Additional duties include participating in grant writing, mentoring undergraduate students, attending lab meetings, and obtaining UAV pilot certification. The position may also involve pesticide applications and collaboration with industry partners.

This assistantship offers interdisciplinary training in weed science and sustainable agriculture, and is suited for candidates with strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to research excellence.

The ideal candidate must have an earned M.S. degree in Weed Science, Agronomy, Plant Ecology, Soil Science, Microbiology, or a closely related field. A strong background in weed ecology, soil microbial interactions, or precision agriculture technologies is preferred. Candidates should have experience in experimental design, data collection, and statistical analysis, with proficiency in relevant software for data processing and interpretation. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, as the candidate will be expected to publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.The successful applicant should possess the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary research team. Experience with field research, laboratory techniques, and greenhouse studies is desirable. Familiarity with remote sensing, UAV (drone) technology, or machine learning applications in agriculture is an asset but not required. The candidate must be willing to travel to research sites, work in diverse environmental conditions, and obtain a UAV (drone) pilot certification for data collection purposes, if necessary.
