Description of duties

Graduate assistantships (MS and PhD) are available in the vegetable and small fruit weed science program at North Carolina State University.  Areas of research include weed/crop interaction (competition/interference), development of strategies for controlling difficult weeds, and efficacy trials for herbicides and non-chemical weed control methods.  Studies will focus on sweetpotato, tomato, bell pepper, potato, blueberry, strawberry, and other vegetable and fruit crops.  Research will involve field, greenhouse, and lab studies.  The student will have the opportunity to present research results at local, regional, and national scientific meetings and local and regional extension meetings.  In addition the student will be expected to publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and extension publications.  The student is also expected to teach a limited number of academic labs in the Horticultural Science Department.  

Qualifications sought

If applying for a PhD assistantship the candidate must hold or be currently working towards a MS degree in weed science, agronomy, ecology, agrocecology, plant science, horticulture, or other agriculture-related field.  The successful candidate must have a valid driver’s license.
