PhD position in vegetation management

Description of Duties

Funding is available to support a Ph.D. student for a multi-year project looking at improving roadside vegetation management practices in South Carolina. The South Carolina Department of Transportation has the 4th largest state-maintained transportation system in the United States with vast acres of roadside vegetation to maintain. Vegetation management expenses comprise a considerable portion of the state’s maintenance budget and management costs continue to rise over the last decade. While the agency has historically incorporated the use of herbicides in the vegetation management program, newer herbicide chemistries and application methods are needed to provide a more sustainable approach to roadside vegetation management. The research project will evaluate herbicide formulations and application methods for control of herbaceous (grasses) and woody brush as part of an integrated vegetation management approach.

We are seeking a talented, capable, and independent graduate student. Our preference is an individual with a MS in forestry (vegetation management), weed science, turfgrass (expertise in warm season grasses) or other closely related plant science background. The prospective student should have a strong background in principles of vegetation management in perennial systems. The research will be conducted at the Clemson University Edisto Research and Education Center in Blackville, SC and on roadside research sites throughout the state. The student will be part of the Plant and Environmental Sciences Department in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences. Funding is available for three years with a fourth-year contingent on funding availability. Please send your CV and a short letter of interest or cover letter to Dr. Michael Marshall at [email protected].
