WSSA Regulatory Consultant
TYPE OF POSITION:
Consultant. One year term with option for a one-year renewal
Budget: Approved compensation and expenses up to a maximum of $30,000
POSITION LOCATION:
Remote. Some travel will be required as recommended.
POSITION PURPOSE:
The primary purpose of this position is to provide leadership, technical advice and draft reports on federal regulatory policies that affect, or impact weed science research and management.
REPORT TO:
The WSSA Executive Director of Science Policy (EDSP) and WSSA Past-President
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Coordinate comments on specific science, regulatory, and policy issues that are of importance to the WSSA and its affiliate societies.
2. Provide written quarterly reports to the EDSP.
3. Provide input on improving federal regulatory policies that include the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), Endangered Species Act (ESA), Clean Water Act (CWA), etc.
4. Provide weed science policy expertise for reviewing and drafting responses to federal register documents from EPA that are of interest to the weed science societies.
5. Attend, participate, and prepare presentations for delivery as requested by the WSSA president and the EDSP.
6. Represent the weed science societies, as directed by the EDSP, in coalitions and other stakeholder groups that deal with EPA regulatory policy.
7. Participate in an ex-officio role on the following WSSA committees:
a. Science Policy
b. ESA
c. Herbicide Resistance Education
d. other committees working on regulatory issues, as directed
8.Write grants that support the mission of the WSSA as the need arises.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Graduate degree in weed science, agriculture, or natural resources, or related disciplines applicable to federal regulatory and science policy.
2. Twenty years of experience directly related to the work of this position that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes experience working for a Federal Agency, in a relevant stakeholder group’s government relations, and/or public affairs office. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work.
3. Active membership in the WSSA.
