Commissioners of agriculture in Nigeria’s cassava growing belt have decried the weeds menace which they blamed for low yields in cassava and the main constraint limiting the competitiveness of cassava farmers in the country.

Is it possible to predict which nonnative plant species will become invasive weeds and when? According to research featured in the journal Invasive Plant Science and Management, the answer is "hopefully yes."
