Researcher I (Weed Science) with Southern Illinois University Carbondale in Carbondale, IL

Type of position The School of Agricultural Sciences within the College of Agricultural, Life, and Physical Sciences at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale has a position available as a Researcher I (Weed Science). The Researcher I will assist with weed science research in the lab, greenhouse, and agricultural field. The successful candidate will work in conjunction with faculty,
researchers, graduate, and undergraduate students, including collaboration with individuals at funding agencies and other universities. This is a 12-month Administrative/Professional position, with future appointment depending on available funding and satisfactory performance.

Description of duties

Specific responsibilities will include: operation and management of field research equipment, data collection and management, and performing pesticide applications. Other responsibilities may include: any and all aspects of conducting weed management and agronomy research, including sharing information and coordinating work with graduate and undergraduate students, crop and weed biomass collection, seed collection and germination testing, soil seedbank grow outs, herbicide resistance assays, equipment and chemical inventory, and maintenance of field and greenhouse research areas. The ability to pay attention to accuracy and detail in following research protocols is an integral part of this position, as well as the ability to work as an effective research team member. Communication with other team members in a timely manner is critical to candidate and project success? this includes daily reporting of tasks accomplished for project tracking, and planning during the field season. Candidate must be able to work in extreme environmental conditions, including outdoors during hot, humid summers in corn, soybean, sorghum, etc. agricultural fields.

Qualifications sought

Minimum qualifications:

  • B.S. degree, preferably in the fields of agronomy, soil science, or weed science, and a minimum of one (1) year of experience is required in conducting agronomic research, data management, and associated field operations in weed science-related research is required.
  • The candidate must have experience using computer spreadsheet, word processing, and graphical presentation software.
  • The candidate must possess or be willing to obtain by the employment start date, both a valid driver’s and an Illinois pesticide applicator’s license.
  • Candidate must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Overnight travel is required on occasion.

Preferred qualifications:

Previous experience in greenhouse research is preferred, as is basic knowledge of regional herbicides, and typical agronomic practices used for weed control. Experience with industry-specific (ARM) software is preferred.
