Description of duties |
The M.S. Graduate Student hired for this project will be responsible for conducting research and Extension materials on weed mapping in Maine wild blueberry fields. The duties will include designing and conducting a field and computer research study to evaluate the feasibility of weed mapping on foot compared to drone and NDVI imagery. Additionally, a cost-benefit analysis will be conducted and outreach materials for farmers created. In-field validation, an economic analysis, and working with farmers from all walks of life is required. Courses offered through the UMaine Drones and Imagery Data program in the School of Computing and Information Science will be required. The student will work under Dr. Lily Calderwood, Assistant Professor and Wild Blueberry Specialist for UMaine Cooperative Extension and the School of Food and Agriculture. Collaboration with Canadian colleagues is expected, and the student will participate in lab meetings, Extension activities, and help with other research projects occurring within the Calderwood lab. It is important to note that the student will be required to obtain an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) license for data collection.
