Iowa State Extension has a forward-looking and responsive Integrated Crop Management team that addresses issues in Iowa crop production. The team is composed of extension faculty and field-specialists in agronomy, weed science, plant pathology, entomology, economics, sociology, and agricultural engineering. Thus, there are excellent opportunities for collaboration and the successful candidate will be expected to develop strong interdisciplinary relationships across the institution. There are also significant opportunities for collaboration with allied research organizations such as USDA-ARS National Laboratory for Agricultural and the Environment, private industry, commodity organizations, and other state and national partners.

Job Description:
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Agronomy at Iowa State University is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professor and extension weed science specialist. We seek a candidate with weed management expertise and outstanding communication skills to develop and lead a dynamic, farmer-centered extension program focused on current and emerging weed management challenges in Iowa. This position is a 12-month, tenure-eligible appointment and has primary responsibilities in extension (55%), with secondary responsibilities in research and teaching. The successful applicant must be creative, resourceful, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Relevant research areas include improving understanding of crop-weed interactions, herbicide resistance evolution, and other factors influencing weed population dynamics. An integrated research and extension program should focus on weed management systems that protect crop productivity and environmental quality. The position will oversee an active herbicide evaluation program with strong ties to industry. Teaching will include instruction of Principles of Weed Science (AGRON 317) an undergraduate course taught one semester each year.

Qualifications sought

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in weed science, crop science, agronomy, or closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with current weed management challenges, strategies, and technologies
  • Experience in extension, research and/or teaching related to weed and herbicide science
  • Experience in conducting field days, workshops, or talks to stakeholders such as students, farmers, and agribusiness audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to publish research applicable to the scientific community and extension clientele
  • Evidence of collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork
