Description of duties

The graduate assistant will focus on weed biology and ecology, focusing on agronomic, physiological, and molecular aspects of crop-weed competition at aboveground and belowground levels. Herbicide resistance biology in relation to biotic and abiotic factors may also be a part of the study.

Overall, the research will involve field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments. The student is expected to publish findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Opportunities exist for presenting results in professional meetings and participating in scholarly activities relevant to the training needs and career goals of the candidate. The successful candidate is expected to assist in teaching a limited number of academic labs within the Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences Department.

Qualifications sought

The preferred candidate must hold or be currently working towards an MS degree in weed science, agronomy, plant physiology, ecology, agroecology, plant science, horticulture, forestry or other agriculture-related fields. 

The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong interest in weed ecology, physiology, and molecular biology, an excellent work ethic, the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary research team, the ability to conduct independent research, and proficiency in English language (written and oral).

This position requires travel to research fields, and a valid driver license is required or must be obtained within 3 months of starting.
