PhD position in Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation

Description of Duties

We are recruiting for a PhD student to work on an integrated research and extension project aiming to contribute to the profitability and sustainability of organic specialty crop production systems. The goal of the project is to facilitate the transition from conventional to organic production systems by optimizing and integrating the use of Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation (ASD) as a biological solution for the management of weeds in specialty crops while preserving soil health for the long-term.
The successful candidate will be recruited for fall 2025 in the Agricultural and Environmental Plant Science program at Penn State University, and co-mentored by Drs. Caio Brunharo (Assistant Professor of Weed Science) and Francesco Di Gioia (Associate Professor of Vegetable Crop Science). The students will focus on the efficacy of ASD in managing weeds and on the impact of ASD on crop yield and quality performance examining various physiological, analytical, and horticultural aspects.
