WSSA Financial Strategic Plan
Financial Strategic Plan Overview
In 2025, WSSA developed a Financial Strategic Plan to strengthen long-term sustainability and align financial decision-making with its mission. A special committee of current and former Treasurers as well as current WSSA leadership conducted a comprehensive financial review. The plan was approved by the Board of Directors on November 13, 2025.
The plan focuses on three key areas:
- Communication: Improving transparency through clear, accessible financial summaries, historical overviews, and regular updates to members.
- Spending Policies and Financial Growth: Standardizing financial policies, maintaining strong reserves, regularly reviewing investments, and growing the Endowment Fund to support scholarships, research, and member participation.
- Accountability: Ensuring oversight through Board and Finance Committee review, regular audits, and ongoing updates to financial policies and procedures.
Together, these priorities provide a framework for financial stability, transparency, and mission-driven growth, positioning WSSA for long-term success and serving as a potential model for other professional societies.

The U.S. Bank Account is used to responsibly manage funds that support WSSA’s mission by handling everyday financial activity, including paying bills and operating expenses.
The General Fund maintains a one year operating expense reserve for WSSA in case of need.
The Endowment Fund is set up to generate dividends and interest that are to be used to support awards and programs that encourage outstanding students to pursue academic training in weed science.
The Money Market/CD Account was initially created in 2017 when WSSA had an excess of funds from previous annual meetings and donations. Three CDs were put into place and they have since matured. The final mature CD was placed into a Money Market account and is used for additional support in operational costs as needed.
